The National Association for Neighbourhood Management (NANM) was formerly known as the National Neighbourhood Management Network. The network was set up in 2002 by Communities and Local Government (previously the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) to support neighbourhood partnerships which are ‘narrowing the gap’ by improving the quality of life in communities across England. Since then it has grown to represent more than 350 partnerships across the country. With neighbourhood working topping the current political agenda across the public sector, there has never been a better time to become involved. The NANM is the place to meet and learn from others who are engaged in regenerating their communities, find out the latest in policy and practice and benefit from the range of support that the association has to offer

The association is an independent not-for-profit, company limited by guarantee, run for and supported by its members.

Neighbourhood management means residents working in partnership with mainstream service providers, the local authority, businesses and the voluntary and community sectors, to make local services more responsive to the needs of their area. It is a process which recognises the uniqueness of each place; allowing the people that live, work or provide services in it to build on its strengths and address its specific challenges. Operating in a defined area and at a scale that people identify with, crucial to its success is the neighbourhood manager; advocate, mediator, facilitator, influencer and negotiator for positive change. It does not involve large amounts of money - rather using existing resources in a better way.

Some of the main services that NM partnerships work with include:
•local authority
•education providers
•police
•employment services
•children and young people’s services
•environmental services
•housing services
Currently there are approximately 350 schemes across England (click here to view map), funded in a variety of ways. Thirty-five 'pathfinder' initiatives are funded by central government while other schemes are supported by the local authority, housing association, the police or other organisations.

Experience from neighbourhood management initiatives suggests there are seven key ingredients to successful neighbourhood management. To download the table describing these, click here

There is increasing evidence that neighbourhood management is an approach which is highly effective at 'joining things up' at a local level and involving residents in the process. To find out more from national evaluations of the pathfinder initiatives, visit www.sqw.co.uk/nme.
